PMRA Supports Development of a New Web-based Agronomic Tool for Canola Growers
On September 3, 2004, the Canola Council of Canada launched Canol@Grow , a new agronomic tool designed to help growers and extension workers quickly find canola production information. This tool is the result of combining key elements of three existing sources of information: the Canola Growers Manual, the Canola Growers Decision Support System CD, and the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Matrix.
The IPM matrix was developed by Health Canadas Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) in cooperation with the Canola Council, the growers, provinces, crop protection industry and non-governmental organization representatives to assist in identifying and implementing practical IPM strategies on the farm. Growers can now find basic production information, an interactive diagnostic tool, and key pest management information in a single window.
Canol@Grow was developed with support from the PMRAs IPM Partnership Program. Under this initiative, the PMRA coordinates and facilitates the development of IPM strategies for specific agricultural commodities in cooperation with a range of partners. In this case, the PMRA worked with the partners mentioned above to promote an integrated approach in pest management. Canol@Grow is the culmination of these collaborative efforts and is available at:

New Product for the Canadian Apple Industry
The active ingredient 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and SmartFresh Technology, its associated end-use product, have been granted temporary registration under Section 17 of the Pest Control Products Regulations.
SmartFresh is used on apples immediately after harvesting to delay ripening, thereby maintaining fruit flesh firmness and extending the storage life of apples destined for immediate sale or storage. By extending the storage life of apples, it is expected that this product will increase the competitiveness of the Canadian apple industry in international markets.
SmartFresh is applied to air-tight apple storage areas without the applicator or others being present. Risks to workers and consumers of apples, as well as to the environment, are low.

Service</a> (PMIS) completed the first phase of the Service Improvement
implementation process, which included conducting a client satisfaction
survey and establishing baselines for service delivery. Based
on the feedback from our survey, the Information Service has
implemented important changes to its service which include the
following: </p>

<li type="1">The telephone voice-mail
menu has been modified and <br>
improved with added features
to increase its user-friendliness;</li>
<li type="1">It is now easier
to find the Pest Management Regulatory Agency<br>
(PMRA) Web site from the main Health
Canada Web page through <br>
the use of a new link, "Affiliates",
which allows our information<br>
to be more accessible. </li>
</ol>
<p>As part of the PMRA's commitment to improving service to
Canadians, and in an ongoing effort to continue providing
fast, friendly and accurate information, the PMIS will be
conducting a follow-up survey in the fall of 2003. We thank
all those who participated in our last survey and hope that
your input in the fall will help us improve our level of service
even more.
